The museum presents a fun-filled day of art activities and gallery exploration on selected Fridays linked to the collection and to special exhibitions. Space is limited and reservations are made on a first-come, first-served basis. Call the museum about availability and costs at 706-828-3867.

Plantation Life
September 26, 2008

Students will tour the exhibition Landscape of Slavery and learn how artists depicted life on plantations. Students will participate in a performance by Carl Winters, "The Kalimba King", and create a piece of pottery based on selected works of art in this exhibition. Appropriate for grades 5–12.

Artists and Their Animals
November 14, 2008

Students will view the exhibition It's a Dog's Life, learn how artists portray animals in art, create a collage based on a representation of their favorite animal, and view a video created by the artist William Wegman. Appropriate for grades K–5.

What Is a Portrait?
March 20, 2009

Students will tour the permanent collection galleries and the exhibition Nashville Portraits to learn about portraits from paintings to photographs. Students will learn how artists have created portraits using various styles, mediums, and techniques, and will create a self-portrait, reinforcing concepts learned on the tour. They will also have an opportunity to participate in a performance, and learn about body movement and expression. Appropriate for grades K–6.

Nature in Art
April 24, 2009

Students will view landscapes in the galleries and learn how to depict space in artwork, identifying foreground, middle ground, and background. They will create an original landscape painting, reinforcing concepts learned on the tour, and they will also have an opportunity to participate in a story time. Appropriate for grades K–5.
