Directed by Preston Sturges, this biographical film is based on the book Triumph over Pain, by René Fülöp-Miller, and tells the story of Dr. William Thomas Green Morton, a nineteenth-century Boston dentist who discovered the use of ether for general anesthesia. Filmed in 1942 but not released until two years later, it marked the end of a remarkable string of critical and commercial successes for Sturges.
