Quantity: 4 file boxes; approximately 1.3 linear feet.Historical/Biographical Note: Glascock Reynolds, born Octobe9, 1903, in Augusta, Georgia, moved to Atlanta with his family when he was thirteen. He studied at the Art Students League in New York City and painted more than four hundred fifty works, mainly portraits, during his lifetime. He married Margueryte Scott of Atlanta in 1937. After instructing combat pilots during World War II, he moved to Augusta, setting up a studio on Cotton Row and then in the penthouse of the Partridge Inn. Returning to Atlanta in 1950, he died there on September 20, 1967. His portrait subjects include Georgia governor George W. Towns; Hamilton Douglas, founder of Atlanta Law School; deans and doctors from the Medical College of Georgia; and Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone with the Wind. Margaret Mitchell’s brother, Stephens Mitchell, was the brother-in-law of Glascock Reynolds.

Acquisition Information: Mr. Wailes Thomas, a native of Atlanta, donated these papers to the Morris Museum of Art in 2004. Margueryte Scott Reynolds was his aunt.

Scope and Content
The seventy-one items of correspondence are mainly letters to Glascock and Margueryte Reynolds about his portrait paintings. The eleven manuscript items are mainly lists of and notes about his portraits, as is the series of miscellaneous items, such as programs for the unveiling of a portrait. Approximately one hundred sixty newspaper articles report on exhibitions and commissions in Augusta, Atlanta, Athens, and Waynesboro, Georgia; Greenville, South Carolina; and elsewhere in the Southeast. There are also several mentions of the Reynoldses in society columns. Nearly one hundred photographic prints and slides document Reynolds’s portraits. Printed materials include a dozen exhibition catalogs and presentation programs, four exhibition announcements, and three periodicals.
