Based on the slightly scandalous (at least here in Augusta) 1932 novel of the same name by Erskine Caldwell and the hugely successful 1933 Broadway adaptation by Jack Kirkland, this film tells the story of a poor family in rural Georgia that struggles to make ends meet as the clan’s patriarch stubbornly refuses help at every turn.
